Patients with chronic myeloproliferative diseases such as polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, or myelofibrosis are more likely to develop acute myeloid leukemia when compared to a healthy population, especially if chemotherapy or radiotherapy has been used as treatment. Having a myelodysplastic syndrome also increases the risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia.
