7) Abdominal pain

Due to the high turnover of cells in polycythemia, a large amount of chemicals is released from such cells including histamine. Histamine has a central role in immunity, but also acts to increase gastric acid production. If this occurs in excess, it can lead to gastric or duodenal ulcers producing abdominal pain which is usually located in the upper abdomen, burning in sensation and increased after meals.
