3) Cytoreductive chemotherapy
Phlebotomy is beneficial for reducing the risk of clot formation, but for those who are at high risk, Hydroxyurea is initiated. It acts on the DNA of cells killing them and reducing their number. It is effective for the rapid reduction of cellular count but comes with its share of side effects including increased risk of infections and on prolonged use, increased risk of leukemia.
